Fire Safety Program

"Russell Phillips & Associates trainers provide fire prevention suppression and evacuation exercises that energize the staff. The exercises are realistic and hands-on … and they get everyone’s attention. Even those employees who have been through fire safety training for some 30 years or more are involved. Russell Phillips & Associates trainers are focused on patient safety and employees at every level - from nursing staff to anesthesiology - are engaged.

"It’s a great working relationship. I never question that I have the right product, or the right program. I don’t have to second guess anything when I work with Russell Phillips & Associates."

Linda Evans, R.N. Operating Room
Nurse Educator, Perioperative Services
Brigham & Woman’s Hospital
Boston, Massachusetts
(747 bed hospital)

The primary reasons for the loss of life in healthcare fires are:

  1. Lack of attention or knowledge of fire-prevention techniques;
  2. Improper fire procedures that do not "fit" the building, nor have a proper focus within today’s healthcare environment; and
  3. Inadequate training of staff (under realistic conditions) to:
    • these fire procedures
    • the special handling of sophisticated equipment
    • the complex and special needs of patient/resident populations.

Since 1976, Russell Phillips & Associates has been involved in the investigation of hundreds of healthcare fires, ranging from surgical fires in the Operating Room to fires involving multiple lives lost in senior independent living apartments, assisted living, nursing homes and hospitals.

The goal of this program is to assess the effectiveness of the facility's existing fire plan during emergency conditions and to assure that procedures appropriately address important facility-specific issues. Our belief is that staff and leadership will not respond properly to a fire unless they are trained under realistic conditions. Therefore, we provide staff and leadership with appropriate hands-on training and exercises to reduce the potential for loss of life and injury in a fire emergency. Our services are customized for your facility and may include:

  • A fire and evacuation assessment of the facility.
  • Custom-designed facility and department-specific fire procedures. Department-specific procedures focus on the roles and responsibilities of staff in those areas (i.e. specific emergency strategies for disconnection of medical equipment in OR/ICU departments).
  • Realistic fire and evacuation training for staff and leadership.
  • Specific programs for high-risk areas including the OR, ICU and Sub-acute care (SURGICAL FIRES PROGRAM)
  • Smoke awareness exercises -- putting staff through simulated smoke conditions.
  • Leadership training on critical thinking to guide the facility through a fire emergency.
  • Fire response team training.
  • Review of fires that have occurred in your facility.
  • Fire drill process improvement and live fire drills.
  • Annual services include training for staff and leadership on fire procedures and a telephone helpline for safety and regulatory compliance-related questions.

Customized programs are available.
