Topic: CT LTC-MAP and the Evacuation of a CT Nursing Home in March 2017
Last year, a burst sprinkler pipe above the main electrical panel room of a 226 bed nursing home in New Haven, CT led to the largest single nursing home evacuation in the history of the state.
In the 24 hours immediately after the pipe burst, the Connecticut Long Term Care Mutual Aid Plan was activated, and 177 residents were successfully evacuated and relocated to 17 area nursing homes. Through on-scene coordination and standing up of the regional Long Term Care Coordinating Center, appropriate beds and transportation were identified.
The pre-planning for facility evacuations through the Long Term Care Mutual Aid Plan enabled area facilities and emergency responders to work together to safely relocate all of the
residents. Like all major incidents, there were many areas for plan and facility improvements identified during the event and the ongoing recovery that ensued.
