Surgical fires occur more frequently than people think. perioperative nurses need to know how to prevent a fire from occurring during surgery and furthermore, if it does occur, suppress it quickly to prevent further injury or death to the patient. This presentation can help all members of the surgical team prevent a surgical fire on a patient from even happening. Should a fire occur, we will review various ways to suppress the fire without endangering the staff or patient. Through the use of case studies and PowerPoint; educators, perioperative nurses, and leaders will understand the roles and responsibility staff members play in prevention and suppression of OR fires. Along with learning about the prevention and suppression of surgical fires, the audience will learn how to successfully evacuate an OR using the building’s smoke compartments. Evacuation criteria is knowledge all should have. All staff should have a basic understanding of smoke compartments and horizontal movement.
